The Constitution Works
Half and Full Day Staff Development Workshops
At Federal Hall National Memorial
See our schedule
of our workshops.
The Constitution Works (TCW) half and
full day staff development workshops familiarize educators
with TCW while engaging them in innovative instructional strategies.
Our day long seminar immerses the participants into the workings
of the three branches of government not as spectators,
but as government officials. Participants are attorneys and
Supreme Court Justices interpreting the First Amendment, Senators
debating the 14th Amendments equal opportunity clause
and presidential advisors developing a domestic policy
proposal.
Our half day sessions focus on a single governmental branch.
During the workshop, participants conduct research and develop
arguments in preparing to role-play a Supreme Court hearing,
a Senate debate, or a Presidential advisory meeting.
Through their exposure to one or all three branches of government,
educators discover ways to liven up curriculum and integrate
civic education in an interdisciplinary fashion. Through additional
emphasis on standards and use of primary sources in studying
democracy, educators take with them new and interesting ways
to heighten young peoples civic knowledge and participation
Through participation in our offerings, teachers will:
- Address national, New
York State, and the Chancellors New Performance standards
in social studies and language arts.
- Be ready to prepare students
for the Regents exams in U.S. History and Government and
the other national, state, and local standardized reading
and writing exams, including state and social studies assessments
in development for 5th and 8th graders.
- Supplement social studies
and language arts curriculum, specifically 11th grade American
History, 12th grade American History, and 7th and 8th grade
U.S. History. Elementary school teachers, grades 5-6, benefit
from TCW as a supplement to social studies and language
arts curriculum and in preparation for statewide assessments.
- Prepare Document-Based
questions, through the use of primary source documents.
- Share strategies for
student practice of democracy in and beyond the classroom.
- Reflect on instructional
practice and approaches.
- Examine various assessment
tools and methods.
