The Constitution Works (TCW) is a project of The Constitutional
Education Foundation, founded in 1989 as a permanent legacy
to the bicentennial anniversary of President George Washington’s
inauguration and our nation’s constitutional democracy. TCW
is the educational arm of the Museum of American Constitutional
Government, based at Federal Hall National Memorial.
Endorsed by the New York State Department of Education and
the New York City Board of Education, TCW has worked with
over 100,000 students in role-plays since its inception. Each
year, TCW serves between 6,000 - 8,000 students and over 300
teachers from Metropolitan New York schools in role-plays,
teacher workshops and our after-school program.
The Constitution Works believes that the future of our communities,
our cities, and our country lies in the hands of our youth.
Now more than ever, we consider students’ comprehension of
civic responsibility to be essential, rather than advantageous.
Our goal is help students understand the power they posses
as part of a democracy, and actualize their potential as future
active citizens, activists and public officials.
TCW brings the central issues of democracy and government
into our schools’ social studies programs. Our curriculum
materials introduce the branches of government through the
study of contemporary issues. Each unit provides the facts
of a given case, applicable Constitutional provisions, and
information about relevant Supreme Court precedent. In dramatic
role-plays, students address the constitutional question they
have probed in class, taking on the roles of Supreme Court
justices, attorneys, or senators in presenting their arguments
at Federal Hall. Teacher workshops and staff development seminars
familiarize educators with TCW’s purpose and activities while
engaging them in innovative instructional and learning strategies.
Our after-school law related mentoring program, Constitution
Workers, partners high school students with attorneys
from public and private sectors for an intensive study of
constitutional law.
